When we hear the word innovation, we tend to think big: groundbreaking technologies, new products, or ideas that completely change the way we do things. However, the more I work in tech, the more I realize that innovation doesn’t always have to be a major breakthrough. Sometimes, it’s simply finding a better way to do something we already do.

As a computer engineer, I think one of the most natural parts of our work is constantly looking for ways to improve processes. Sometimes that means changing the way we write code or building an innovative tool or app. Other times, it means simplifying a process, automating a repetitive task, improving a test, or even asking, “Why are we doing it this way?”

And those small changes can make a bigger difference than we expect.

I’ve seen this in my own work. A test might work perfectly, but maybe it includes a fixed wait every time it runs. Replacing that process with a smarter mechanism that checks for the expected result and continues as soon as it’s ready might seem like a small improvement. But when that test runs over and over again, those seconds (even minutes) start adding up.

That’s what I like about the kind of improvements that start small but create meaningful impact. You don’t always need to completely reinvent the task at hand . Sometimes, you just need to improve a small part of your workflow.

There’s something especially valuable about having spaces where women in tech can share these ideas. Innovation doesn’t always come from having the most experience or the loudest voice in the room. Sometimes, it starts with being curious enough to ask questions.

Could we do this differently? Is there a better way? Can we automate this? What would make this easier for the next person?

These are questions worth asking , whether you’re just starting your career or you’ve been working in technology for years.

Innovation isn’t limited to technical solutions either. Sharing knowledge, creating better documentation, helping someone understand a complicated concept, or finding a way to make onboarding easier can make an impact. One small improvement can help one person, which in turn helps the team, and might  eventually become part of a larger solution leading to better outcomes for everyone.

So, instead of looking for the next big idea, maybe we should start by looking for a small win:

What is one thing you do every day that might make your day a little easier? One process that could be simplified? One task that could be automated? One win you could share with someone else?

Innovation doesn’t always start with a breakthrough, sometimes, it starts with a small improvement. And when those small improvements add up, the impact can be meaningful.
